Prem gets shivers with the mention of English language and so hence he prefers to leave his education and work for his father's recording shop. Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a Haridwar bred middle class guy who is safe to be termed as a man-child. Coming from a patriarchal cognitive set-up, she doesn't fit the quintessential idea of beautiful. Having completed her degree in B.Ed and waiting for a teaching job, the most visible thing about her is her weight. His father is keen to get him married and the family goes to a local temple to meet Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar). Prem owns a cassette shop in the local market.
Set in Haridwar, 1990s, the film captures the nascent feel of the town. Prem Prakash Tiwari (Ayushmann Khurrana) listening to Kumar Sanu is the film's opening shot. Then their Hatred for each other turns into love eventually. The relationship between the boy and the girl becomes uglier. A marriage takes place against the will of the boy. Lyricist Varun Grover was involved in another film with a similar title - he co-wrote the screenplay for the film "Zor Lagaa Ke Haiya" (2009).A beautiful love story of a under-educated boy and a over-weighted girl.This was reportedly the first Hindi film to be shot entirely in the twin temple towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh.The Censor Board came under criticism for muting the word "lesbian" and requiring a few words to be replaced in the film.She had to work on losing weight after shooting for the film. In her own words, Bhumi Pednekar was "never a skinny girl" but gained 30 kilos for her role in this film.It was only later that she found out that it had been an actual audition and that she had been selected for the role. Instead, Sharma told her to do a "mock audition". At some point, it was decided to audition Bhumi for the film's female lead role. Bhumi Pednekar had started off working on this film as an assistant to Shanoo Sharma, the casting director.It took several more years for the film to materialise. He had even submitted the script to Yash Raj Films in 2008 but not heard back from them. Sharat Katariya had written the film's initial draft in 2007.Ayushmann Khurana's character in the film was portrayed as a Kumar Sanu fan. Some of the big names of Hindi film music from the 1990s - Anu Malik, Kumar Sanu and Sadhna Sargam - reunited after many years for this film.It won several awards including three National Film Awards - Best Feature Film in Hindi, Best Female Playback Singer for Monali Thakur, and Best Lyrics for Varun Grover. The film was a big hit and was also critically acclaimed. This was writer Sharat Katariya's directorial debut.
